RULES OF THE POWER CLEAN COMPETITION

SUMMARY

The athlete will grip the barbell with both hands and lift the barbell in one continuous motion to the shoulders. The athlete must stand-up with the barbell on the athlete’s shoulders and become motionless. The athlete must hold the barbell on the shoulders until the referees gives the “Down” signal. When the athlete receives the referee’s “Down” signal, the athlete may drop the barbell back to the platform but must do so in a controlled manner. No slamming of the weights will be tolerated. The athlete may power clean, squat clean or split clean the weight. Each athlete shall have 3 attempts.

THE CLEAN LIFT

The barbell is placed horizontally in front of the athlete's legs. It is gripped, palms downward and pulled in a single movement from the platform to the shoulders, while either splitting or bending the legs. During this continuous movement, the bar may slide along the thighs and the lap. The barbell must land on the shoulders and not touch the chest before reaching the shoulders. Once the barbell is caught on the shoulders, the athlete must stand-up with the barbell and place the athlete’s feet on the same line, parallel to the barbell with legs straight and then become motionless. The athlete may stand-up in his own time but must stand-up and become motionless. The lifter must wait for the referee’s “Down” signal before returning the bar to the platform.

GENERAL RULES FOR THE CLEAN LIFT

·         The technique known as "hooking” is permitted. It consists of covering the last joint of the thumb with the other fingers of the same hand at the moment of gripping the bar.

·         Once the athlete lifts the barbell above the knees, the movement is considered an attempt. If the athlete lifts the barbell above the knees but does not finish the lift, then it is a Bad Lift and will count as one of the athlete’s three attempts.

·         After the referee’s “Down” signal to return the barbell to the platform, the lifter must lower it in front of the body to the platform in a controlled manner. Any slamming of the barbell or uncontrolled release will result in a Bad Lift and not count.

·         The use of grease, oil, water, talcum or any similar lubricant on the thigh or legs is forbidden. Athletes are not permitted to have any substance on their thighs. The athletes may use chalk (magnesium carbonate) on the hands, thighs, etc. Chalk will be provided at the Contest.

·         Athletes may use Gloves, Wrist Wraps and Tape, but not Straps or Adhesive.

INCORRECT MOVEMENTS AND POSITIONS FOR THE CLEAN LIFT

·                     Lifting the barbell and stopping or pausing the barbell prior to catching it on the shoulders.

·                     Pulling from the hang position.

·                     Touching the platform with any part of the body other than the feet.

·                     Leaving the platform during the lift or allowing the barbell to go off of the platform.

·                     Dropping or replacing the barbell to the platform before the referee’s “Down” signal.

·                     Slamming or not controlling the dropping or replacement of the barbell to the platform.

·                     Failing to finish with the feet and the barbell in line and parallel to the plane of the trunk.

·                     Failing to replace the complete barbell on the platform.

·                     Athletes cannot use straps or an adhesive or have a mechanical advantage over other athletes.

RULES OF THE POWER CLEAN COMPETITION CONTINUED

ATHLETE ATTIRE

Shorts and T-shirt/School Jersey or singlet must be worn. The athlete’s elbows and knees must be able to be seen at all times, unless a knee brace or sleeve is worn. If a knee brace or sleeve is worn, there must be skin showing in between the brace or sleeve and the shorts. The lifter cannot expose any body part that may be deemed offensive. No T-shirt shall be or depict any material of an offensive, racist, sexist, illegal, religious, or immoral nature. No hats or bandanas allowed. Sweatbands around the forehead are permissible. The meet director will have final approval of all apparel. No more than one weightlifting belt may be worn.

BARBELL

The weight set on each platform will have a tolerance of +/- 1 kilogram (2.2 Lbs.). All attempts must be per Kilogram, however, athletes can request their attempts in Lbs., which will be rounded to the nearest Kilogram. The Referee’s Assistant will tell the athlete the applicable weight to the nearest kilogram and will also communicate the applicable weight to the Loaders in kilograms.

ATTEMPTS

Each athlete shall have 3 attempts at the lift. If the athlete misses a weight, he may either re-attempt the same weight or increase the weight for his next attempt in order of the lifting. No decrease is weight will be allowed. The athletes will be placed on one of multiple platforms according to their Weight Class. The athlete with the lowest beginning weight will take their first attempt and be followed by the next athlete with the same or the next highest weight. Once all athletes in a Weight Class have taken their first attempt, the athletes will repeat the lifting in the same order as their first attempts, regardless of the weight requested for each athlete’s second attempts. For example, if there are ten athletes in a Weight Class, then each athlete will have nine attempts in between their first and second attempts and an additional nine attempts in between their second and third attempts, pending an athlete passing on his attempts. An athlete may pass on their attempts, however, those attempts will be lost. Depending upon the entries and weight classes, the meet directors may divide the athletes into multiple sessions for the same weight class on different platforms.

SCORING

The athlete with the heaviest lift in each Weight Class will win. If two or more athletes are tied for 1st place, both athletes shall be given a 4th attempt. The highest of the 4th attempt will break the tie. The order of lifting will be determined randomly.

Each school is allowed any number of athletes from 1 to 10.  Each school is allowed a maximum of 10 lifters. The first 5 places will score team points. The points will go as follows: 1st place = 5 points, 2nd place = 4 points, 3rd place = 3 points, 4th place = 2 points and 5th place = 1 point. In case of a team tie, the team with the most 1st place athletes will be declared the winner.

UNSPORTSMAN LIKE BEHAVIOR

If a lifter uses foul language (swearing) while on the platform the lift shall be counted as a “Bad Lift”. If used on more than one occasion the lifter may be disqualified from the competition. If an athlete, coach or other participant exhibits unsportsmanlike behavior or is caught cheating, the athlete, coach or other participant shall be asked to leave.
